How a Cyprus Salary Calculator Works: Gross to Net in 2026, Step by Step
· Demetris D.
Type a salary into any Cyprus salary calculator and a net figure comes out. This post shows the exact arithmetic behind that number for 2026, so you can verify any calculator you use, including ours.
There are three deductions on a Cyprus payslip, and the order matters.
Step 1: Social insurance, 8.8% with a ceiling
Employees contribute 8.8% of gross pay to the Social Insurance Fund. In 2026 contributions stop at the insurable earnings ceiling: €5,742 per month, €68,904 per year.
On €30,000 a year that is €2,640. On €90,000 it is capped: 8.8% of €68,904, which is €6,064, not 8.8% of the full salary. The details live in our social insurance guide.
Step 2: GeSY, 2.65% up to €180,000
The General Healthcare System takes 2.65% of gross income, capped at €180,000 of annual earnings. On €30,000 that is €795. Almost no employee hits the cap; details in the GeSY explainer.
Step 3: Income tax on what remains
This is the step most people miss: social insurance and GeSY are deducted from your income before tax is calculated. Income tax applies to the remainder, using the 2026 brackets: 0% to €22,000, then 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%.
The full calculation for €30,000
| Line | Annual | Monthly (12 payments) |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | €30,000 | €2,500 |
| Social insurance 8.8% | €2,640 | €220 |
| GeSY 2.65% | €795 | €66 |
| Taxable income | €26,565 | |
| Income tax | €913 | €76 |
| Net pay | €25,652 | €2,138 |
Total deductions are 14.5% of gross. Income tax alone is only 3.0%, because the first €22,000 of taxable income is tax free.
What a good calculator must also handle
A bare three step calculator gets simple cases right and everything else wrong. The cases that separate accurate tools from rough ones:
- The 13th salary. Spreading the same gross over 13 payments changes your monthly figure and, for higher salaries, slightly changes annual social insurance because the double payment month hits the monthly ceiling. Full mechanics in the 13th salary explained.
- The 2026 deductions. Children, rent or mortgage on a primary residence, green upgrades and disaster insurance now reduce taxable income, with income based eligibility caps. See the new deductions guide.
- The contribution ceilings. Both the social insurance monthly ceiling and the GeSY annual cap must be applied, or high salaries come out wrong.
- The 2025 comparison. The reform changed every threshold, so a useful tool shows you both rule sets side by side.
The MisthosCy calculator handles all four, shows the per bracket breakdown, and cites its sources (the Gazette text plus PwC, KPMG and EY summaries) on the page.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my effective tax rate so much lower than my bracket? Because brackets are marginal and apply only to taxable income. A €30,000 salary touches the 20% band but pays 3.0% of gross in income tax.
Does the calculator include employer costs? Employee calculators show your deductions. What your employer pays on top, around 15.4% extra, is covered in what an employee really costs.
Is the result exact? It reflects the statutory rates and caps for 2026. Individual circumstances, such as benefits in kind, exemptions for new residents, or union funds, can shift the final payslip. Treat any calculator as an estimate, not advice.
