The 13th Salary in Cyprus: How It Works and How It Is Taxed in 2026

· Demetris D.

A large share of Cypriot employees receive thirteen salary payments a year: twelve monthly wages plus an extra one, usually in December. Here is what the 13th salary actually is, who gets it, and precisely how it is taxed in 2026.

What the 13th salary is

The 13th salary is an extra payment, typically equal to one month's wage, paid before Christmas. It is not a statutory right for everyone in Cyprus: it is owed where the employment contract, a collective agreement, or established practice provides for it. Where it has been paid consistently, it generally becomes an acquired right that the employer cannot unilaterally drop.

Some sectors also pay a 14th salary, often split around Easter; the same logic applies.

The key mental model: same year, different rhythm

If your offer says "€30,000 with a 13th salary", you receive the same €30,000 a year, split into 13 payments of about €2,308 gross instead of 12 payments of €2,500. The 13th salary does not add money to an annual package; it changes the payment rhythm. When comparing offers, always compare annual gross.

How the 13th salary is taxed

The 13th salary is normal employment income. Income tax, GeSY and social insurance all apply:

  • Income tax: assessed on your annual income, so the spread over 12 or 13 payments makes no difference to the year's tax. The 2026 brackets see the same €30,000 either way.
  • GeSY: 2.65% of every payment, identical totals across the year.
  • Social insurance: 8.8% of each payment, but with a monthly ceiling of €5,742. This creates the one real difference, below.

€30,000 with and without a 13th salary

12 payments 13 payments
Gross per payment €2,500 €2,308
Net per payment €2,138 €1,973
Net per year €25,652 €25,652

Identical annual net, smaller monthly net, plus a "free" double payment in December that was your money all along.

Where it gets interesting: higher salaries

Social insurance is capped per month. In the month your 13th is paid, you receive roughly a double payment, and everything above €5,742 in that month is not insurable. On €60,000 over 13 payments, the December double payment of about €9,231 exceeds the ceiling, so annual social insurance comes to €4,973 instead of the €5,280 a 12 payment schedule pays. Your net is about €215 higher with the 13th. The effect starts around €38,000 and grows with salary until the annual ceiling dominates either way.

The salary calculator has a 13th salary toggle that models exactly this, including the December ceiling effect.

Frequently asked questions

Am I legally entitled to a 13th salary in Cyprus? Only if your contract or collective agreement provides it, or if it is established practice in your employment. It is widespread but not universal.

Is the 13th salary taxed more heavily? No. There is no special rate. It is ordinary income within your annual totals; withholding in December is simply adjusted.

Does the 13th salary count for social insurance and pension? Yes, up to the monthly insurable ceiling in the month it is paid.

If I leave mid year, do I get a pro rata 13th? Where the right exists, the usual practice is a proportional payment for the months worked. Check your contract's wording.
